Questions About Our Lough Ennell Cycling Routes?
Everything you need to know about our guided cycles around Lough Ennell, the Belvedere House loop, and crannog island exploration for active retirees.
Our Belvedere House loop is around 25-30km depending on which heritage stops you visit, and the crannog island routes range from 20-35km. We pace all rides for comfort rather than speed, so there's plenty of time to enjoy the views, chat with other cyclists, and explore the sites we stop at. You're never rushed—we're all here to enjoy the ride.
You should be comfortable cycling 20+ kilometres on mixed terrain—mostly flat, easy lakeshore roads with a few gentle climbs. If you've been cycling regularly, you're ready for us. We're not a training group; we're a community ride for people who actually enjoy being on a bike.
Crannogs are ancient Irish lake dwellings that date back thousands of years. We've mapped routes that bring you to several sites around Lough Ennell where you can actually see these archaeological remains and understand how people lived on the water. It's fascinating history, and cycling between the sites gives you a real sense of how the landscape shaped settlement patterns in medieval Ireland.
Absolutely. The estate has beautiful gardens, woodland walks, and the house itself tells a wild story—built in the 1700s with one of Ireland's most dramatic fake ruins overlooking the lake. We typically spend 45 minutes to an hour there, so you can explore at your own pace before we head back along the shore road.
Bring water, sunscreen, and a packed lunch or snacks—we always stop for a proper break. Weather in Westmeath is changeable, so pack a light waterproof and dress in layers. The lakeshore can be breezy even when it's calm inland, but the riding itself is sheltered and steady.
You can book through our website or get in touch directly—we'll confirm dates and numbers with you. Absolutely bring a friend; in fact, many of our regular riders started because someone invited them along. The more the merrier, as long as everyone's comfortable with the distance.
